Engram is a term Richard Semon coined in 1904 — a material trace the brain leaves of every experience. For fifty years it drifted on the periphery of science. Tonegawa's lab closed the loop neuron by neuron. Engram Infra continues the same arc.
Coins the word in Die Mneme. Every experience leaves a material trace on nervous tissue. A hypothesis without experimental access.
Three decades of ablating rat cortex. Specific lesions never erase specific memories. The engram is everywhere and nowhere — distributed beyond capture.
Optogenetic activation of tagged neurons reproduces a specific memory. The engram stops being a hypothesis and becomes an engineering object.

Semon insisted on this in 1904 without proof. Tonegawa proved it in 2012 with optogenetics. Between them, half a century of careful, frustrated work convinced us that the trace is real even when we cannot reach it.
The substrate of biological memory is biophysical — a distributed pattern of synaptic weights. The substrate of AI memory is whatever the runtime decides on the day. It does not have to stay that way.
Tonegawa's contribution was not the substrate, but the address. The cell he tagged could be re-activated by pointing at it.
We give the same gift to artificial memory. The on-chain commit is the address. The vector is the index. The cipher key is the entry token.
Knowledge that cannot be transferred under economic constraints is captured. The Web2 default for chat history is exactly this kind of capture — fungible only to the provider, monetised only by them.

The Greeks treated memory as the source of every creative act. The opposite of memory — Lethe, forgetfulness — was the river you drank from to lose yourself. Modern agents drink from Lethe by default. We give them a second source.
